At the beginning of the twentieth century Elie Metchnikoff, the Russian Nobel prize winner, then
based at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, first suggested that ‘bad’ microbes could be replaced with
‘good’ microbes in the gut and lead to better health.
While the use of fermented milk in diets was an age-old practice this was the first time an
explanation of the possible role of bacteria was proposed. The term probiotic was not used until
1965 but by the 1970s it had taken on the meaning we know today and an industry began to arise.
Innovative business In the late 1980s a couple of
Swedish entrepreneurs saw the possibilities and began working with Lactobacillus reuteri, acquiring
commercial rights to the strain and launching their company, Biogaia.
There is a wealth of clinical research on
Lactobacillus reuteri, with around 70 clinical studies involving over 4,000 individuals performed
with the Biogaia strains. The research includes evidence of a positive impact on acute diarrhea,
antibiotic-related diarrhea, infant colic and oral health, as well as various other general health
benefits.
Biogaia has become a world leader committed to pioneering natural products that will promote human
health; many of these products have been world firsts. The company combines the extensive research
on its strains with high-level engineering capabilities that develop unique delivery mechanisms
specific to client requirements.
Unique
delivery Two such developments are the LifeTop Cap
and the Probiotic Straw, both of which allow probiotics to be delivered in a fun way using drinks.
The probiotic powder is held in a capsule within the LifeTop Cap and is only released into the
liquid just before drinking.

In the
Probiotic Straw, on the other hand, the live bacteria are contained in a droplet of rapeseed oil
and can be used with any drink (except hot drinks). Added to this the straws can be kept at room
temperature making it an ideal way of administering probiotics to adults or children.
While many other probiotics are delivered in capsule form Biogaia has
opted for a range of other approaches. For example, its lozenges are designed to dissolve on the
tongue, thereby delivering live bacteria to address imbalances in the oral
flora.
Biogaia Probiotic Chewable
Tablets Another product is the Biogaia Probiotic
chewable tablets, which improve digestive health and reduce antibiotic induced diarrhea. These
tablets are a convenient way of taking probiotics as only one tablet a day delivers 100 million
live bacteria and can be chewed, swallowed or allowed to dissolve on the tongue.
Tablets can be stored at room temperature and in addition to the live
bacteria contain isomalt, xylitol, sucrose esters of fatty acids, hydrogenated palm oil, lemon-lime
flavoring, and citric acid.
Probiotics for infants Probiotics can be very beneficial for infants and children as well and much of
the clinical research carried out on Lactobacillus reuteri involves these groups. Probiotics can be
used by children of any age and have been shown to improve digestive health, boost immune systems
and even address colic.
Colic is a condition that can affect around a quarter of infants
causing distress to both the child and the parents. Biogaia Probiotic drops are ideally suited to
treating colic as the drops can be added to food or drink without affecting the taste. Clinical
trials with Lactobacillus reuteri have shown a 74% reduction in crying time with infants
treated.
The drops also contain sunflower oil, medium chain triglyceride oil
and silicon dioxide and should be refrigerated. Daily dosage of only five drops delivers 100
million live bacteria.
Biogaia also has an oral rehydration solution (ORS) product focused
on infants suffering from acute diarrhea. The solution contains zinc as this has been shown to
reduce the duration of diarrhea and is recommended for oral rehydration of
children.
